Nile tilapia is the most farmed fish in East Africa: hardy, fast-growing and always in demand in homes, hotels, schools and fish stalls. African catfish breathes air as well as through its gills, tolerates crowded, low-oxygen water and grows to 500 g–1 kg in 6–9 months.
Both fit well on a small farm. A 300 m² pond (for example 15 × 20 m) is a common start, and three or more ponds stocked a few months apart let you harvest fish for sale all year.

Oxygen is lowest just before dawn. If fish gasp at the surface in the morning, stop feeding for a day, add fresh water and aerate. Check water colour and level daily and look for leaks weekly.
