Overview
Fodder is a key component of our integrated farming system. At Vinfarm, we grow high-yielding fodder crops to feed our goats, sheep, cattle, rabbits and other livestock. We demonstrate practical, affordable and sustainable fodder production methods for farmers with small and medium land sizes.
Goats and sheep eat about 3–4% of their body weight in dry matter every day. For 10 adult goats or sheep, plan roughly 1/4 acre of Napier or Brachiaria, 1/8 acre of legumes and 50–100 fodder trees along the boundaries.

Napier Varieties

Planting & Cutting Napier
- Rows 1 m apart, 50 cm in the row; canes with 2–3 nodes
- Or tumbukiza pits 60 × 60 × 60 cm with manure
- First cut 3–4 months after planting, then every 6–8 weeks
- Cut at 60–90 cm, 5–10 cm above the ground; chop before feeding
Legumes & Trees
- Lucerne: well-drained, limed soil; cut every 4–6 weeks
- Desmodium between Napier rows raises protein
- Fodder trees 50 cm apart in hedgerows; first cut after about 1 year
- Introduce legumes slowly to avoid bloat
