Origin and History
Dorper sheep were developed in South Africa in the early 1940s by crossing the Dorset Horn (white body) with the Blackhead Persian (black head) — the name itself joins the two: Dorset + Persian. The aim was to combine the hardiness of the Persian with the good conformation and meat qualities of the Dorset. The result is a hardy, fast-growing meat sheep that performs well in arid and semi-arid conditions.

Our breeding flock is pure Dorper. Every animal we sell has its level (T-level or Pure) stated, so you know exactly what you are buying. You are welcome to see the flock on a farm visit.

What do Dorper sheep eat?
Mainly good-quality forage such as Napier and other fodder crops, plus hay and crop residues, minerals and clean water. Concentrates are added where needed, for example for fattening lambs or ewes close to lambing.
How many lambs do they produce?
Usually 1 to 2 lambs per lambing, sometimes 3. Good feeding and management make a big difference to lambing results.
Are Dorper sheep suitable for small-scale farmers?
Yes. They are hardy, low-maintenance and grow fast, so they do well in small flocks as well as large commercial ones. We also offer training if you are just starting.
